The Padres added reliever Craig Italiano, left-handed pitcher Steve Garrison and outfielder Chad Huffman to their 40-man roster on Friday. Italiano, 23, was acquired in the July trade that sent outfielder Scott Hairston to the Oakland Athletics. He compiled a 1.44 ERA in 19 relief appearances at Single-A Lake Elsinore after the trade.

The Padres announced their 2010 Spring Training schedule on Thursday, one that has them opening with a familiar foe. The Padres will play their annual charity game against the Seattle Mariners on March 4 before officially starting the Cactus League season the following day with another game in Peoria against the Mariners. This will be the Padres' 17th spring in Peoria.

The Padres lost to Valley Christian, 34-21 last week. Hamilton Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League. Serra started the season 3-1, but went 2-4 over its last six games.

Free agency is set to begin at 9:01 p.m. Thursday, though if history is any indication, the Padres will likely be quiet on that front again this offseason. The Padres, coming off a season where they had a $43 million payroll, aren't expecting to have much more to work with in 2010.

As far as approaching free agency, we're not going to be major players for free agents because of the size of our payroll   -Jed Hoyer

Markham resident George Kottaras was claimed off waivers by the Milwaukee Brewers Wednesday. THe 26-year-old came up to the majors with the Boston Red Sox. Playing 45 games with the Red Sox this past season, Kottaras had a .237 batting average with one home run and 22 hits.

To help his guys out, Jefferson is turning to some advice that he got San Diego Padres Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn. The lifetime .338 hitter told Jefferson when he got into a slump at the plate, his solution was to get more batting practice: "seeing the bat make contact with the ball -- every time."

When I was in fourth grade, I attempted to construct a California Mission from flour, water and salt. I fashioned my model, painted it and over time watched its walls crack and crumble. It turns out that my mission had more similarities with the authentic adobe prototypes than I could have known.
